Chalk - Not Just for Hopscotch
The newest tool in my studio, chalk is one of the oldest drawing mediums - dating back to the Stone Age. Often turned to by artists for quick preliminary sketches, working with chalk is an art form in its own right for finished drawings. This naturally-occurring medium is ideal for shading, contouring, and highlighting - techniques that add a sense of depth to two-dimensional works. Artistic masters such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and Rembrandt used chalk to sketch and create their art, as well as Degas, Matisse, and Picasso - and now me. Adding chalk drawings to my portfolio has inspired me to tackle subject matters that I otherwise might not explore.
